The Superhero in ME!

Picture

This is a collection of all first grade classrooms on the day of our exhibition! We strutted down a red carpet to show our second grade friends how we all can be superheroes! We taught them how to use different breathing techniques that help us when we may be in the red, blue, or yellow zone. We also shared the ways we use positive self-talk! Please enjoy!

Positive Self Talk Coloring Book
This short video clip is just a portion of an entire lesson about who is a superhero. Earlier in the lesson, students noticed and wondered about two superhero comic pictures side-by-side. The students engaged in a conversation about what exactly makes a superhero. One student mentions that being a superhero means "helping others". Another student mentions that being a superhero "depends on their heart and courage". I, then, asked students if superheroes have to wear those cool costumes and the first graders, collectively, decided that a superhero includes the people they see everyday. For example, they were excited to hear familiar names of people in our school community as superheroes. Lastly, students quickly recognized that they, too, are superheroes in their community.

Lesson Plan
Picture
Students participated in an activity called "Superhero Chat" where they used their superhero skills to help solve the problems at each table. Small groups consisted of 4 to 5 students. The students began learning about the zones of regulation: red, green, yellow, and blue. Students know that being in the green zone means you are able to focus in the learning and be happy. Some strategies that they learned about included; deep breathing, sensory jars, and positive self talk. You'll see more of what they did in the next photos!
Picture
In this specific picture, you will see one small group of first graders discussing what they would do if they were in this picture to help the kids get back to the green zone. The picture is showing two toddlers who are fighting over the one bottle. Students wrote words or used drawings of what they would do to help solve the problem.

This is another example of what a small group drew to help the child in the picture get back to the green zone. This small group decided that the child in the picture was in the blue zone meaning they were sad, so to help them get to the green zone, they would ask them to play on the playground together.
